Have you checked the boot rubber seal itself. I had a similar issue and tried all as you have talked about. It turned out that 1) the compound behind the rubber seal had gone brittle and the seal had moved, allowing water behind. This then tracked onto the plastic liner and into the inner compartment, this was further exasperated by 2) the boot Boot space and storage. The Focus Estate has a huge boot. You get 575 litres with the rear seats in place and a cavernous 1,650 litres if you fold the bench flat. To put that into perspective, that maximum figure is 45 litres more than you got in the old Mondeo Estate. It’s also a good square shape, which makes it easy to load bulky items
It's not opening that's the problem here, it's unlocking. The boot remains locked when they open the doors using the manual key blade. The only way you could potentially unlock it without central locking is to lay the rear seats flat , crawl into the boot, and then remove the plastic panel on the tailgate to physically access the lock and either put power to it or manually prize it open.
That left the 2.0 diesel or petrol autos for both Focus's (Zetec, Ghia or Titanium) or C-Max's (Titanium) - but in acceptable condition and at the right price these are very few and far between. Focus 1.6 auto's and C-Max 2.0 Zetec petrol autos were quite easy to find as ex Motability, but in particular the Focus 2.0 estate autos were quite rare.
