The retarder is a part of certain transmission configurations. It's job is to slow down the truck without using or in addition to the service brakes. Kinda sorta like Jake brakes, but in the transmission instead. I've never seen that message before, but I use the automatic setting.

Most trucks today have automatic gear and a retarder with 5-6 settings where one of them is automatic.. As a simple rule you use engine brake nearly for all kind off slow down, shifting over to foot brake right before you stop.. You can also use the JAKE brake (B) key, but I only noticed that you slow down when you combine braking with the Jake. Nice sound though. It's the retarder that's stuck, turn it off. Look for Retarder higher, and retarder lower in key config. I mapped them to pgup and pgdn respectively.
